love in end of times

march 23rd, 2020

like most people, I find myself taking stock

of the things that are truly important

in these so-called end of times.

like most people, I’m finding this exercise

to be exhausting. they say reward will come

in time, but then again, they also say

we’re running out of it.

I’m trying to be forgiving of myself, especially

in these so-called end of times.

I’m trying to be more forgiving of you too.

and here you are: the solitary life preserver

in the sea of things-that-want-to-kill-me,

offering your safe harbor—whatever that means

in these so-called end of times.

I’m inclined to take the bait, to wait it out

underneath your sea of warm blankets,

to carve out a space for myself within your chest,

to wait for this storm to pass,

to wait for the light to come.
